Exercise & Pain:

Exercise or just being physically active has many health benefits for people of all ages. It is well
recognized in the literature that shows exercise can improve so many different areas of your health.
Some examples of the benefits include:

– Improved bone health
– Improved heart health
– Reduced risk of chronic disease
– Maintain muscle strength and mobility
– Better sleep
– Improved mental health

In the modern world, there are many distractions stopping us from being active such as our busy
lives and technology or in some cases even the fear of hurting yourself or making your condition
worse. In my physiotherapy clinic, the most common reason for people not doing their exercise
program or living an active life is because they are struggling with pain and very often exercise
aggravates their pain so they stop. This is completely understandable of course but it’s important to
remember a few things about that.

Exercise and being active can be extremely beneficial in helping you managing pain long-term when
it is done correctly. There can be many reasons why people cannot sustain living an active life but a
very common one is people trying to do too much too soon. It is clear that people find it difficult to
maintain an exercise program if they are consistently experiencing pain during or after doing it. This
is often due to the joint or tissue being hypersensitized or inflamed.

Seeing people every week in the clinic struggling with the activities they love doing because of pain
was one of the driving forces behind creating Laser Medical. I saw trialing the Rx Laser devices in my clinic, how people who would frequently have flare ups going for walks, gardening or playing sport it
stopped when they started to regularly use the Rx laser device at home. There is a very good
randomized controlled study (which is considered a high quality research method) in 2020
which examined the efficacy of low level laser therapy combined with exercise for shoulder pain and
it concluded that when both laser treatment and exercise were combined, the pain intensity
reduced, shoulder function improved and medication use reduced. Another well researched
randomized controlled study from the journal of clinical medicine showed that when low level
therapy was combined with strength training for knee osteoarthritis it significantly reduced the
number of patients using analgesic and anti-inflammatory medications and increased performance
in the sit to stand test.

My overall view, is that maintaining an active life is very important for your overall health and also
for helping to manage your pain but it is important you find a way to keep your pain under control to
allow you to do the activities you enjoy, and the Rx Laser device is certainly a good option for that which does not have any short or long term side effects.
